The Cellulite Myth It Not Fat It Fascia edition by Ashley Black Joanna Hunt Religion Spirituality eBooks

I purchased the FasciaBlaster strictly for vanity and cosmetic reasons. I wanted my 55 year-old legs to look like they did when I was 35, smooth, sleek and cellulite free. Ashley Black promised this, stating her tool was “100% effective, no matter how big or small you are!” I’m 5’7” and 140lbs. The device is even advertised to “cure” many ailments (which, as a nurse, should have been a red flag for me). I am leery of “quick fixes” and medical scams. I did extensive due diligence. I joined her online Facebook groups. I could find no evidence to debunk her claims. I could find no negative reviews or locate any posts that did not claim “amazing results” from use of the device. I also couldn’t find any actual medical trials or studies but the data I was able to gather told me to buy it!! And I did. And in the first 3-4 months, I felt like I was getting results. I was telling all my friends and family about it ad nauseam and even formed a local support group. Then things started to change despite me following the protocols (which keep changing without notice), heating as instructed, oiling, activating, flushing, icing, etc. I started getting cellulite where I didn’t have it before, namely my arms. The cellulite on the back of my thighs appeared worse. And most of all, my skin had changed. It appeared old, dry and crepe-like despite following directions on the blogs, and in the videos and on the Facebook page. I thought I was alone in my disappointment and was ready to chalk it up to another failed attempts at ridding myself of those nasty lumps and bumps. Until I found a Facebook page where results that were anything less than stellar were being posted. I used the FasciaBlaster for 9 months before quitting. Come to find out, the creator- AB, was censoring her Facebook page; not allowing negative results/adverse reaction post to be posted… period. She was deleting any/all negative comments. I finally discovered that I wasn’t the only one NOT getting the results that AB promised and also learned there were women actually being HURT with the device. My issues are small compared to some of the many others. I was made worse by a device that was guaranteed to give me 100% cellulite elimination. So now that I knew I wasn’t alone, I did some more digging. When I bought the tool, her Terms and Conditions state that the FasciaBlaster is NOT a medical device however, the packaging it came in says it is a Class 1 medical device with US Patent No. D735.818. The T&C also state that the AB Company does not identify itself or any of its personnel, as a licensed dietician, nutritionist, certified personal trainer, massage therapist, medical provider, or licensed/certified as a professional in any field. She touts herself as a scientist but has no medical or health related credentialing what-so-ever. She holds her man Bart Jameson as out as a Fasciologist and her gal Kathleen Stross as a Neuroscientist. It is an insult to those of us with well-earned degrees and a dangerous practice to engage in because she is regularly offering medical advice to the unsuspecting public several times a day on her FasciaBlaster Facebook pages. She flat out denied to users that were experiencing weight gain, that the FasciaBlaster did NOT and could NOT cause weight gain but then updated her T&C to include weight gain as a possible side effect. The updated T&C are 11 pages long, and include multiple new contraindications and warnings-the last T&C update was 4 pages. Because there were no clinical trials or studies conducted outside of “her camp” prior to it’s release to the masses, one can only conclude we, the consumers, have unknowingly been her test subjects. She actually called us her “guinea pigs” on a post as recent as March 10, 2017. And I know that had AB been honest, had she allowed dissenting views to be shared, had she listed ALL of the possible side effects/adverse reactions, had she posted genuine, unfiltered and un-photo shopped photographs, I would not have purchased the product. This woman’s business practices are despicable. Her integrity is questionable. And now, she’s threatening to sue anyone/everyone who has spoken out about her and her bad practices. The “device’ is hurting people. It needs to be remove from market and studied. I agree that it has worked for some people. It even worked for me in the beginning.

The Cellulite Myth It Not Fat It Fascia edition by Ashley Black Joanna Hunt Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

I would not recommend purchasing this book because it is not factual and simply promotional material to go with her fasciablaster product, which, in my opinion as a doctor, is medically unsafe.

Additionally, I wish I had not wasted money on purchasing this book as most of the information in her book is freely available on her website. I believe that the fasciablaster is medically unsafe, but even if you want to buy a fasciablaster, this book does not really provide any more useful information that is not already freely available on her blog.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PSEUDOSCIENCE
Let's look into Ashley Black's claims about the fasciablaster works

1) Ashley suggests that cellulite is caused by fat trapped in layers of fascia (this could be true) and that in order to fix the cellulite, you need to smooth out your fascia (this could also be true?). She also promotes the idea that healthy fascia should be able to be pulled away from your muscle when you pinch it between your fingers (this is NOT true, and completely wrong). As with most pseudoscience, it takes you from a reasonable assumption (cellulite is caused by tight fascia) slowly into completely incorrect assumptions (healthy fascia can be pulled away from the muscle... like loose skin). It may be true that cellulite is caused by the uneven pulling of the skin's fascia, and indeed, her tool indeed will pull your upper layers of fascia and skin away from the muscle to reduce the appearance of cellulite, however PULLING YOUR FASCIA AWAY FROM THE MUSCLE IS DEEPLY UNHEALTHY YOUR BODY.

This actually explains why many long term users of the fasciablaster have been experiencing loose "crepey skin", because the upper layers of skin have become completely disconnected from the muscle, and I suspect that the physical trauma of using the fasciablaster actually causes damage to the fascia, rather than making it more healthy.

2) Ashley says that bruising promotes healing because it brings blood flow to the area. It does not, it simply shows that you are breaking your skin's capillaries, which is DAMAGING the layers of skin. It is bringing blood flow into the tissue, but not in a way it can be easily carried back into the blood stream as you have DAMAGED the vessel carrying the blood, which does not promote healing, bruising it is proof that you are actually causing damage.

Any bruising can cause "haemosiderin staining" which is actually the iron from your blood cells getting trapped in the layers of skin and causing a brown staining, like a persistent iron rust - some women find that this staining stays only for a week or so but some women have found this to stay around for months if not years, which is not ideal for a product which is designed to improve the look of your body.

3) Ashley says that blasting hurts when you start doing it because that is a sign of unhealthy fascia but she says that over time, it will become less painful, and that this is proof that the fasciablaster is making your fascia more healthy. What is likely to actually be happening is that the upper layers of skin have their blood supply damaged from repeated trauma of using the fasciablaster. There is definitely damage to the blood vessels happening when you see bruising, which Ashley Black, strangely, promotes. Reduced blood supply from damaged vessels may be reducing sensitivity of nerve endings to the tissue, or it is possible the nerves are damaged directly due to scarring in the area from repeated trauma. Again, this is not a good thing - so if the using the fasciablaster hurts less over time, it does not mean that the fascia is becoming more healthy, in fact, it is a sign the skin and fascia is becoming damaged.

4) Ashley Black claims that this product produces "detox", because she says "toxins" can get trapped in the layers of fascia and are released during fasciablasting. She says this "detox" can cause symptoms but she says not to worry as she has a number of things she recommends to do in order to "flush out the toxins". The syndrome of "detox" symptoms felt by people using the fasciablaster is likely to actually be a condition called rhabdomyolysis - this is caused by damaging muscle cells in the process of vigorously scrubbing the body as described by Ashley Black. Rhabdomyolysis is not a detoxification process, it is actually TOXIFYING your blood, increasing the workload on your kidney - fasciablasting damages cells, which release cell metabolites normally kept inside the cells. This is in no way good for your body.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BUT IT LOOKS LIKE IT WORKS?
Many ladies have had short term positive results from using the fasciablaster and rave about how it has changed their life. I would be cautious about this for a number of reasons

1) It is likely that the protocol of blasting is causing weight loss rather than the tool itself. Ashley Black promotes general healthy eating and a blasting protocol that involves warming the body up (through exercise or a sauna) and then physically scrubbing the body with the blaster multiple times per week, some people do this up to 30 mins - 1 hour per day. The sauna, physical exercise and diet alone is likely to be the real cause for women who have experienced weight loss using the product.

2) This tool is likely to be hiding the cellulite under swelling but not actually getting rid of the cellulite. Using the fasciablaster to physically scrub the layers of skin and muscle in the area of cellulite will cause local trauma the areas where people have cellulite, which in turn is causing swelling to the area, which hides the cellulite temporarily. Women who stop blasting describe that their cellulite "comes back" very very quickly ie. within a couple of weeks (there's a few on youtube who have tried it, and claim this is proof it works) - this doesn't make sense. If the cellulite had disappeared due to fat cell lysis (fat cell bursting) as Ashley Black claims, then it should take quite some time for the cellulite to reappear - fat deposition takes time and people eating healthy and exercising regularly should not really have fat deposition happening at all. Deliberately causing chronic swelling / inflammation is not good for your body and can cause a host of health problems.

3) Many of the pictures on the website and facebook page and even Ashley's own fasciablaster "study" have been taken in differing lighting conditions. In some cases on the facebook page, the pictures have been used in the wrong order ("before" pictures are actually "after" pictures - one client had a tattoo in her "before" picture which was not in her "after" picture, this was quickly deleted).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CONCERNING NEGATIVE SIDE EFFECTS
I would like to explain a few concerning negative side effects women have experienced after using the fasciablaster, which Ashley promotes in her book.

1) There are a number of women who have experienced weight GAIN. from using the tool over the long term The creator of the product claims that these women are lying, however, if you check the warnings on the product's own website, you will see a long list of possible side effects, including a warning that it can cause weight GAIN. A product that is promised to reduce cellulite has weight GAIN as a possible side effect. Why would this be the case? It is likely that using the fascia blaster over a prolonged period of time causes chronic inflammation in the body, which in turn then increases cortisol levels consistently over a long time period which would then increase fat deposition. Through this mechanism, it makes sense that this tool can cause weight gain.

2) The product contains BPA, which actually can be transferred into the bloodstream through the skin using the fasciablaster. Ashley Black has repeatedly said that this should not be an issue as we are not eating the fasciablaster. However, thermal receipt paper containing BPA has been found in studies to transfer BPA across the skin into a person's bloodstream through only touching the paper. According the Ashley Black, the body should be warmed up and oiled before using the fascia blaster. Both of these things INCREASE potential transfer of BPA from the product to the skin and into the bloodstream. Why is BPA so important? It is a synthetic esotrogen and excess estrogen in the body would also cause weight gain, as well as a host of other problems.

3) A few women have had clots using this device and while it is hard to prove that these clots have been caused directly by the device, the product does actually contain warnings not to use the device if you have any history of blood clots. The exact mechanism for this is unclear to me at this point, but it seems possible as this product can cause blood vessel damage, which is a trigger for clot development (the proof that the fascia blaster can cause blood vessel damage is that it causes bruising - bruises are caused by blood coming out into the tissue due to vessel damage). Many of these women did not have any documented history of blood clots before using the product.

4) The product website states that pregnant women should not use the product. Some women have had miscarriages whilst using this product. Again, causation is unclear, perhaps chronic inflammation and the ""toxins"" released from fasciablasting (cell metabolites released from damaged cells) may increase the likelihood of miscarriage. I would NOT recommend use of this product on pregnant women or anyone planning to get pregnant.
