I am quite convinced that you are visiting this page daily, just praying for someone to attack you personally so that you can then look down your nose and scoff at that person as well. You may even be hoping that they will leave their e-mail address so that you can insult them in turn. Translation: I won't allow myself to be identified with someone as cowardly and insufficient as yourself. There's your opening, take it ... my e-mail is there.What Mr. Allegretti has here is a work of literature that far exceeds the quality of work being presented in many places by leaps and bounds. I am not a big fan of poetry in general, for the mere reason that every poet seems to think themselves the master of this art when, in fact, there is no such thing as good or bad poetry but merely your interpretation of what good or bad is depending of how much of a know-it-all you think you are (which adds up to ... meaningless, because everyone has an audience somewhere). But every once in a while, someone does manage to grab a hold of what - I believe - poetry was intended to be: A literary review of life seen from different vantage points, a painting done with words, a musical piece played with a pen, a glimpse into the author's spirit. This is what Joel has accomplished. He should be rewarded for his contribution to the realm of poetry/poetic literature. A job well done!!

I have owned this book for nearly a year and each time I peruse it, the enormity of its brilliance astounds me again and again. Joel Allegretti is a master craftsman of language. Some of my favorites include "The Singer","Regeneration", "We Tell of a Morning" and "Anthology of Hands", which ignite the core of the human soul. The book's timelessness is evident in the first poem, which personifies so eloquently the image of the moon. I eagerly await his next collection of poems.
. . . and put Allegretti and his Publisher, Brett Rutherford, on it for this superb debut volume of poetry. As the 150th book by Poet's Press, it's clear that Rutherford expect this volume to have staying power premium paper, engravings by Albrecht Durer and others of Pestilence as one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, a hand-bound paperback version, and a hardcover version. Allegretti's work in this volume warrants the treatment the writing style is engaging, voice is consistent, and the poems are uniformly well-written. Since the events of September 11, poems such as "The Hashishin," "Bellman of the Dead," and the title track "The Plague Psalms" take on an eerie prescience. While religious imagery permeates the volume, the poems are not religious in nature, but instead tour us through time and culture from the Andalusian region of Spain to the plagues of medieval times, from the Phantom of the Opera to the guitar as a woman. The reviewer who gave it one-star is an operative from a cave somewhere in Afghanistan; as both a poet and a literary magazine publisher, I'm pleased to extol the virtues of this book, and highly recommend it to anyone who loves poetry, and who wants to spend time with someone who writes it well.

Reviewed by Thomas Jones Whether or not you are religious, if you have ever felt remorse for past deeds or any sense of final judgment, The Plague Psalms by Joel Allegretti superlatively captures the spirit of spiritual doom. As a collection of poems centering around the plague period in Europe and Arabia, the language and imagery exquisitely makes the reader feel as if participating and suffering from not only a physical plague but also a moral one.
Based on his interests in the Andalusia of Moorish Spain and the Middle Ages, Joel Allegretti weaves an intricate web of social, spiritual, and moral issues that force the reader to confront the human dilemma in a new way. If a plague on the order of the Bubonic plague were to strike again, how would that affect one's life? This book is not for the frivolous reader. It delves the great universal questions of human birth, life, pain, death, and rebirth, the horror and the joy in all of the metaphorical meanings these entail. In all, it is a cathartic experience. You will not walk away from this book without a greater appreciation for human life. The four horsemen of the apocalypse that decorate various sections of the book should be a warning to anyone who fears the unknown.
For those seeking visionary poetry with stylized, accomplished use of language, The Plague Psalms is a must read. Get ready for an ambitious book that goes where no book has gone before.
Allegretti draws you back, word and phrase at a time, to a collective mythology -- one which is operative in the particulars of our lives. Don't be misled by the exoticism of the language or imagery it is there to enjoy.
The tone of these poems is similar to the Book of Psalms (hence the title) or the more luscious passages of the Koran. The color is rich like the Tales From the Thousand and One Nights.
Whether clear, smokey, or colored in with blood, the author's words stop you a bit yet, in phrases they sing easily. The poems take off like song! (when we can't understand exactly how this is done, we tend to say, 'the author has a masterful command of the language').
Considering this whole collection of poems, Mr. Allegretti opens up a neccessary perspective from the dungeons of human consciousness and experience is a view to the blue of heaven and the shining stars beyond.
This book is like a review of our past, but the honesty of the writing brings it into the context of the present.
If you wonder how poems with reference to the bubonic plaque can leave you refreshed and glad you read them ... open this book.
